Fifteen first half minutes in which we conceded twice and had a man sent off proved to be our undoing on a night when nothing went our way in the north London derby. After an even start, Spurs took the lead from a questionable penalty, and doubled the advantage moments after Rob Holding was shown a debatable red card. It was always an uphill battle after that, and Tottenham’s third at the start of the second half ended any hopes of a comeback. With the stakes so high for both sides, predictably, the game started at 100 miles an hour. Both sides were struggling to keep the ball but we had half chances through Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka. Gabriel Martinelli was released by a wonderful pass from Takehiro Tomiyasu, but his cut back to Martin Odegaard was snuffled out by the home defence. Just as it looked like we were starting to settle, Spurs were awarded a soft penalty. Cedric was adjudged to have bundled over Heung-Min Son at the far post. Referee Paul Tierney pointed to the spot, despite Arsenal protests. Harry Kane sent Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way to open the scoring. Moments later a sliding block from Tomiyasu denied Kane a second when he worked the ball on to his right foot in the area. Just after the half hour the referee made another huge call that went against us. This time Rob Holding, who had already been booked, was shown a second yellow card for a clash with Son. Replays were inconclusive as to whether the defender had moved his arm in to Son, or just stood his ground. Either way, we were down to 10 men, and soon down by two goals too. Kane doubled his tally, tapping in at the far post when a corner was flicked on. We needed to regroup, and quickly. We reshaped at the back and started to attack the hosts again. Nketiah had a shot tipped over after a searing run from Saka, and Odegaard failed to make clean contact when the ball fell to him on the edge of the area. There looked to be chances for us if we could get at the Spurs defence, but our night from bad to worse right at the start of the second half. Kane turned Gabriel inside the box and the ball fell to Son to tap home. The next chance fell our way, Martinelli the architect again, but Saka’s goalbound shot was blocked. Not surprisingly though, it was Spurs who had most of the ball, and Ramsdale made a fine save to deny Emerson Royal on the hour mark. Son screwed a shot over from close range, while at the other end Odegaard shot straight at Lloris, but the game was over as a contest by then. Despite the huge sense of frustration at the final whistle, our fate remains in our hands. We are a point clear with two games to go. It’s still all to play for. Despite our best efforts, we finished the Barclays FA Women’s League season in second place on Sunday, as we defeated West Ham 2-0 on the final weekend. We came into this game knowing that we’d have to better Chelsea’s result against Manchester United in order to lift the trophy - but unfortunately Emma Hayes’ side ran out 4-2 winners at Kingsmeadow, leaving us just one point behind the league leaders. Knowing what was at stake, the game got off to a cagey start as we looked to settled our early nerves and create some early chances. Beth Mead looked lively from the off and saw her powerful effort pushed away by Mackenzie Arnold, before guiding her instinctive header just wide of the far post. The best chance of the first-half fell to Vivianne Miedema, though, who saw her goalbound effort blocked from six yards after being picked out inside the area by Noelle Maritz. Elsewhere in the Women’s Super League, Manchester United found themselves leading Chelsea 2-1 at the break, only to concede twice in less than five minutes after the restart, placing the hosts back in pole position. Needing a goal to stand a chance of winning the title, Jonas Eidevall turned to Stina Blackstenius off the bench and the Sweden international scored with her first touch, latching onto Miedema’s pass to find the bottom right corner. Steph Catley then went on to double our advantage with a stunning finish at the near post, but by this stage, Chelsea were leading by two goals at Kingsmeadow, pushing our hopes of securing the title back to the 2022/33 season. #arsenal #Blackstenius #arsenalwomen Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. We secured three crucial points in our penultimate game of the Women’s Super League season on Wednesday, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at Emirates Stadium. Beth Mead opened the scoring before Caitlin Foord struck twice in the second half, leaving us just one point behind league leaders Chelsea going into the final weekend of the 2021/22 campaign. After starting the game with high intensity to our attacking play, Mead opened the scoring after being picked out by an incisive Leah Williamson pass, driving forward to the edge of the area before firing into the bottom corner. Tottenham came close to an equaliser almost instantly after via a chaotic goalmouth scramble, but we soon regained control of the tie and kept the visitors at arms length, with Vivianne Miedema and Foord coming close to adding a second. Following the break, we continued to show maturity in our play as we balanced risk and reward with each attack, and we were eventually rewarded for our patience with Foord sliding in at the back post to convert Miedema’s delivery. Our third and final goal of the evening was the best of the bunch, though, with Foord picking up the ball on the left wing and cutting inside, before curling a stunning effort into the top right corner. We dominated the game from start to finish, but deep into stoppage time, Tottenham were awarded a penalty after Angela Addison went down inside the area. Addison stepped up to pull one back for the visitors, but her low effort struck the post, meaning Manuela Zinsberger is still yet to concede a penalty since joining the club. #arsenal #arsenalwomen Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. Eddie Nketiah’s first-half brace was eventually enough for us to claim all three points, but it was far from straight forward, despite Leeds being reduced to ten men from the 27th minute. Our striker scored twice in the opening ten minutes, and we looked to be in total control, especially after Luke Ayling was dismissed for a lunge on Gabriel Martinelli. But Diego Llorente’s second-half goal from a corner ensured a nervous finale. We started like a train though. Nketiah created the opening goal out of absolutely nothing. Illan Meslier pondered on a back pass just too long, Nketiah pounced, dispossessed the keeper and bundled the ball over the line. The Emirates was bouncing, and within minutes Nketiah dialled up the atmosphere even more with his second. Gabriel Martinelli deserves a huge amount of the credit for the way he hassled and harried away on the left wing, broke into the box and cut the ball back for Nketiah to sweep home first time. We were 2-0 up inside ten minutes, and looking to maintain the frantic early pace. Martinelli swung in another deep cross but it was just beyond Nketiah on the stretch. Cedric - playing at right back with Takehiro Tomiyasu shifted over to the left - was next to try his luck, firing over after Martin Odegaard’s cut back just evaded Nketiah. A wonderful first-time pass from Odegaard set up Saka inside the box, but his powerful shot was straight at Meslier. Leeds were reduced to 10 men when Luke Ayling was red carded for a reckless foul on Martinelli on the byline. The former Arsenal youth player went in two-footed on the Brazilian, and referee Chris Kavanagh’s initial booking was overturned after VAR intervention. In the ensuing melee Raphinha was booked - you could start to see why the visitors had set a new record for most yellow cards in a Premier League season. We were starting to camp out in the Leeds half. Martinelli squeezed a shot right across the line before Odegaard had a free kick cleared from underneath the cross bar by Diego Llorente. We continued to dominate after the break. Martinelli twisted and turned his marker before shooting at Meslier at the near post, while Nketiah had a header from a corner blocked. From Leeds’ first shot of the game they got back into it. Junior Firpo flicked on a corner and Llorente was unmarked at the far post to score past Aaron Ramsdale. All of a sudden from a position of total control, there were now some nerves around the Emirates. Leeds - throwing everything at the game now in their relegation fight - sent Meslier up for a late corner. We cleared it to Pepe but he couldn’t get it under control on the halfway line with the goal vacant. Ramsdale had to make a late save from Rodrigo, as incredibly we were hanging on for the points. There was no little amount of relief when the final whistle went. Four points clear, three games to go. The quest for European qualification goes on. #arsenal #nketiah #arteta Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. We are delighted to announce that Mikel Arteta and Jonas Eidevall have signed new contracts with the club. We marked the moment with a unique double signing at Emirates Stadium. “I’m excited, grateful and really, really happy today,” Mikel said after signing the extension, which runs until the end of season 2024/25. "When I spoke to Josh he could see the club at the same point and he wanted to take the club the way I wanted to do it. So everything that he’s said, and that Stan has said when I’ve been together with both of them, they’ve always delivered. “We want to take the club to the next level and to compete really with the top teams. In order to do that, we have to be playing in the Champions League. We have to be able to evolve the team, improve our players, improve all departments, generate even more connection with our fans, improve the atmosphere at the Emirates, be able to recruit top, top talent and the best people for this club to drive this project to that level.” Jonas Eidevall has also put pen to paper on a new deal after an impressive first season in London, in which he has taken the Women's Super League title challenge all the way to the final weekend. Jonas, who joined us from Swedish side Rosengard last summer, has signed a contract to the end of the 2023/24 season. “It’s great,” he said. “It allows me to continue to work for a club that I love so much and be around people that I really, really like, and to be able to achieve things together, so I’m really looking forward to that.” Josh Kroenke, speaking on behalf of our owners Kroenke, Sports & Entertainment, said: “My father and I are delighted to have extended both Mikel’s and Jonas’ contracts. It provides stability and clarity for the future and helps us all move forward together effectively. “Mikel’s commitment and passion are clear for everyone to see. We are confident that as we move forward, he will get us back to competing for the top trophies in the game. “Turning to Jonas, he has had a fantastic start to his career in England. He has done a terrific job with the team, and we are in contention for the title on the last weekend. We are confident that he will continue to take us forward in the years ahead.” The pair signed their deals together in the directors’ box, overlooking the pitch at Emirates Stadium, in the presence of chief executive Vinai Venkatesham technical director Edu Gaspar and head of women's football Clare Wheatley. “I think the timing is perfect,” Edu said. “I really believe the message will be a big lift to everyone. To the fans, to the club, to the players, to Mikel. “It’s important to show everyone where we want to go as a club. We are going to face a big summer again and it’s important to have our manager here.” Vinai added: “The ambition of this football club is simple, and it comes from the owners down. This football club needs to be competing for the biggest trophies in the game, in Europe and in England on the men's side and on the women's side. That's where we want to get to, we know we're not there yet, but we're moving towards that goal. I'm hoping everyone can see the progress that we're starting to make against that goal. "Today is a really, really important day because Mikel and Jonas recommitting here to us, to Arsenal, to the project and to the journey. "There's a long way to go and a lot of hard work ahead, but with Mikel and Jonas, we're convinced we have the right people surrounded by the teams around them that can help us get there.” #arsenal #arteta #eidevall Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. Steph said: “It feels absolutely incredible. I’ve been here for two years now and I’ve made some incredible friendships and I feel right at home here. I’ve been through some tough times and some great times and I feel that I’m growing so much as a person and as a player. We delivered one of our finest performances of the season so far on Sunday as we defeated Aston Villa 7-0 at Meadow Park. It was another vital victory in the race for the Barclays FA Women’s Super League title, which now leaves us just one point behind league leaders Chelsea with only two games remaining. Coming into this fixture full of confidence, we started strong and took just 11 minutes to open the scoring with Vivianne Miedema combining with Beth Mead, before finding the back of the net from the edge of the area. Her second of the afternoon came from an almost identical position too, with our No 11 surging forward from deep and firing another powerful effort beyond the reach of Sian Rogers. We continued to dominate for the remainder of the first half and Miedema had a late chance to seal her hat-trick, only to be denied by a fine save. It didn’t take long for us to extend our lead after the restart, though, with Miedema displaying some outstanding footwork to beat her marker and rattle the woodwork, forcing Rachel Corsie to inadvertently deflect the ball into her own goal. After seeing Miedema score twice from outside the box, Mead wanted in on the action and scored our best goal of the afternoon, powering home from 30 yards to find the top right corner. Lotte Wubben-Moy then went on to make it five, reacting first inside the penalty area to convert from six yards, before substitute Stina Blackstenius showed outstanding composure to slot the ball between the legs of Rogers. But the action wasn’t done there and after winning a penalty, Kim Little showed class to hand the ball over to Nikita Parris, who duly found the bottom corner to net her 50th Women’s Super League goal. #arsenal Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more. Arsenal centre backs past and present, Leah Williamson and Tony Adams, have joined Aaron Ramsdale, Emile Smith Rowe, Rob Holding and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang in supporting local businesses, this time Buckenham Locksmiths, as part of the Arsenal Supporting Supporters series. Inspired by player-business partnerships of yesteryear and kicked off by local pub, The Tollington and Rob Holding, this is the fifth instalment in a series of local businesses pairing up with members of the Arsenal men’s and women’s teams to raise awareness of their services and drive footfall on and around matchday. Many local businesses and community organisations who surround the local area were just as pleased as the club to see fans return to Emirates Stadium this season after matches were played behind closed doors. Alongside Arsenal players, a variety of local businesses feature in the campaign, some of which are well known to Arsenal fans and others that need the extra support and awareness. Along with adverts which are aired across the businesses’ and club channels, the businesses are a part of Arsenal fixtures and feature on the perimeter boards, on the stadium’s big screens and inside the matchday programme. #arsenal #arsenalsupportingsupporters Subscribe to the Official Arsenal ID-card Channel: arsn.al/youtube Follow us on Facebook: arsn.al/facebook Follow us on Twitter: arsn.al/twitter Follow us on Instagram: arsn.al/instagram Follow us on TikTok: arsn.al/tiktok This is the Official ID-card channel for Arsenal Football Club. Goals from both centre-halves gave us a battling, huge victory in the chase for Champions League qualification, and secured a top-six finish in the process. Rob Holding's first-ever Premier League goal gave us the lead in the first half, only for the hosts to cancel it out just before half-time. But Gabriel's header at the far post in the second half was enough to clinch all three points and keep us in fourth place. After a fairly quiet opening half hour, in which neither goalkeeper was properly tested, it was Holding - in the side for the injured Ben White - who broke the deadlock. Eddie Nketiah had earned a corner after a run and shot that Lukasz Fabianski got down well to turn wide. Bukayo Saka floated in a dangerous corner, and Holding rose highest to head in off the post. It was his first-ever goal in the Premier League - on his 81st appearance - and it breathed life into a game that hadn't really got going until then. We failed to build on the lead though, and West Ham came roaring back. Aaron Ramsdale immediately made a fine save to deny Declan Rice at the near post, but we could not hold out until half-time. Vladimir Coufal was afforded time and space on the right flank to pick out Jarrod Bowen, who took a touch before firing past Ramsdale, via a slight deflection off Gabriel. Early in the second half there was a real heart in mouth moment when Ramsdale came tearing out of his box to meet the ball ahead of Bowen. The West Ham man went tumbling, but the decision went our way, with Bowen booked for simulation. Shortly afterwards we retook the lead. Another inswinging corner caused problems, the ball was half cleared to Gabriel Martinelli and he crossed for compatriot Gabriel to head in from close range. As the game entered the final 20 minutes we had a glorious chance to score the third. Mohamed Elneny spotted Nketiah's run from deep and released him with a long pass. The striker shifted it past Kurt Zouma, onto his right foot, but placed his shot just wide from 20 yards. The hard-working Nketiah had another chance from similar range soon afterwards, but this time Fabianski got down to save well. Sambi Lokonga blazed a shot over late on, but it didn't matter. The work had been done, and victory was savoured at the end by the vociferous travelling fans. European football for next season is assured - now to make sure it's in the Champions League. #arsenal Enjoy match highlights, training and behind the scenes to get closer to the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe, Vivianne Miedema, Nicolas Pepe, Alexandre Lacazette, Leah Williamson, Bernd Leno, Nikita Parris, Tobin Heath, Mana Iwabuchi, Jordan Nobbs, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kim Little, Gabriel Martinelli, Aaron Ramsdale, Beth Mead, Ben White, Thomas Partey and more.
